Your Twitter Followers Are Mindless Zombies

Earlier today a colleague asked me how he could get more followers on Twitter.  Of course I was happy to share my knowledge and provide a few tips that would help him do just that, however, the subject of attaining thousands or even tens of thousands of Twitter followers is one that needs to be more specific in nature.  You see, it is one thing to simply have tens of thousands of Twitter followers, but it is an entirely different and much more beneficial scenario to have tens of thousands of Twitter followers who are genuinely interested in or care about what you have to say!

The vast majority of tweeters out there who tweet on a regular basis and have a large following, are speaking to a crowd of uninterested followers.  It is unfortunate, but many people use automated tools to gain Twitter followers and to follow others on Twitter.  Twitter can be a very powerful tool to build your brand and communicate with your audience, but first you must learn how to properly build a twitter following that is genuinely interested in your products and services as well as what you have to say.  So lets talk about how you would go about gaining interested Twitter followers.

Your website/blog should be your central hub.  From there you can gain thousands of truly interested Twitter followers.  Here are some things you can do to gain yourself thousands of interested Twitter followers:

  1. Display a Twitter icon linked to your Twitter account prominently on your website.

    Displaying the Twitter icon on your site is an announcement to your website visitors that you have a Twitter profile and encourages them to visit your profile to follow you.

  2. Show your Twitter feed on your website.

    Displaying your Twitter feed on your website is a great way to help your site visitors get to know you better.  It also provides a direct way for people to connect with you and follow you on Twitter.

  3. Syndicate your websites RSS feed to Twitter

    By syndicating your websites RSS feed to Twitter it will allow you to post your blog updates and announcements to your Twitter profile immediately notifying your Twitter followers of new content on your website.

  4. Display a link to your Twitter profile on your other social networking sites

    Many of your friends and followers on your other social networking websites more than likely have a Twitter account as well.  Displaying a link to your Twitter profile on your other social networking websites gives them the opportunity to follow you on Twitter.

  5. Post often to Twitter

    The more frequently you post to Twitter the more likely you’ll increase your Twitter following.  Posting to your Twitter account also allows your followers to engage with you and get to know you better.  An tip about posting, be genuine and not artificial.  Allow your followers to see who you are and share your personality.  This will gain trust and garner respect among your followers.

Learn to use your Twitter profile properly and you will guarantee a large following of interested followers who will hold on to every word you say!

    The one thing that still alludes me, Sean, is the RSS Feed. Where do they come from and how do I either get one, or learn what mine is for my website and blogs? I’ve gone online and read instructions, which have not cleared up the matter for me. I’d love for you to post something on that topic in your blog. Thanks.     Hi Sylvia, your RSS feed link should be displayed on your website if you already have one. For example, I’ve noticed your using WordPress.com to host your blog, which provides an RSS feed for your blog by default. In the sidebar of your blog you will find a box entitled “RSS Links”. Simply right click your RSS-posts link and copy the link for use on other sites.

    To syndicate your link to your Twitter account and automate your blogging posts to Twitter I use a service called “SocialOomph“. I’ve found this service to be very useful as it allows me to automatically post a new blog post immediately to Twitter the minute I publish it, thus notifying my followers of new content on my site. This service also allows you to automate your followers in that when someone follows you, the service will automatically have you follow them back.

    SocialOomph offers a free and paid professional version as well. The professional version is provided at a monthly fee of around $30 but can be test driven for free. It provides additional features that allow you to attain a broader reach and manage your social media efforts, such as automatic posts/updates to your Facebook account as well. I’d suggest you visit SocialOomph and evaluate which package is best for you. I’ll post a blog post that provides more detail on how to use the service and its benefits, which are numerous, at a later date.
