A common question many of my clients ask me is “How can I drive more traffic to my website?” The key here really is to drive targeted traffic to your website.  So the question really should be “How can I drive more targeted traffic to my website?” The more targeted your traffic is, the higher quality traffic you have and the better your chances of success!  There are several methods available to accomplish this and we’ll get into those at a later date, but for now, here are 10 methods that will drive targeted traffic to your website.

1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Optimizing your website content for easy indexing by search engines is one of the best methods to drive targeted traffic to your website.  SEO tells search engines what your website and the content it displays is all about.  The more targeted your SEO, the more successful you will be at driving targeted traffic to your website.  Use a service such as Scribe to assist in your search engine optimization efforts.

2. Backlinking

Backlinking is where others link back to your website from their own.  The key here is to gain backlinks from others who operate within your specific industry or niche.  The more links you have back to your website, the more popular search engines think you are.  One way to do this on your own is to use social bookmarking sites like Delicious, Digg, DropJack and StumbleUpon.

3. Article Posting

Article posting is a great way to drive targeted traffic to your website, and it’s free.  It is also another method to gain backlinks to your website.  Use sites such as EzineArticles, GoArticles and ArticleCity to post your articles or blog posts for free.  Your articles will also be indexed by search engines and served up in search results.

4. Guest Posting

Write guest blog posts and submit them to blogs that are known as industry leaders within your niche.  This will have a huge impact and drive highly targeted traffic to your website and allow you to tap into their existing traffic and community.  Not to mention it helps to build your credibility and establish you as an industry leader as well.

5. Pay Per Click (PPC)

Create a landing page and ensure it is search engine optimized so it is properly indexed by the search engines, and link it to your Google Adwords and Yahoo Sponsored Search accounts.  Make sure the landing page and keywords you use match and are accurate and relevant to the content displayed on the landing page.  For example, if you want targeted traffic for a blog that discusses the benefits of outhouses, then make sure your landing page content and keywords are relevant to outhouses!

6. Really Simple Syndication (RSS)

Now you know what RSS stands for ;-)  Make sure your more technically savvy website visitors can subscribe to your RSS feed.  Prominently display the RSS icon or a link so they can subscribe to your RSS feed.  Those who subscribe to your RSS feed are serious readers usually and want to hear what you have to say.  This makes them highly targeted traffic.  If they like what you’re saying, they may refer others to your site as well.

7. Email List

I’ve stressed the importance of this in the past before.  You need to have a targeted email list.  Your dreams of making big money on the internet will never come to pass if you don’t have a targeted email list.  Like your RSS subscribers, those who optin to receive email communication from you what to hear what you have to say and are much more targeted that a standard website visitor.  Again, they may even refer others to your site if you treat them well.

8. Webinars

Host a webinar about a particular subject, topic, product or service in your industry or niche and advertise the date and time on your website, through social media and to your email list.  Make sure it provides value to those who attend.  You can charge a small fee if you’d like but it is best to consider providing some webinars for free to attract others to your site and assist in establishing your brand.  Use a service such as GotoWebinar to conduct your webinar.  It is cost effective and can host upto 1000 participants.  Webinars are very attractive and will help you gain targeted traffic as well as subscribers to your email list if you do it right!

9. Reviews and/or Recommendations

Ask industry leaders or prominent bloggers to review your blog, posts and/or products and provide their feedback or make a recommendation.  If a prominent blogger posts a review for you, it will garner interest in your content and introduce their blog community to you and your website allowing you to tap into their existing traffic, thus providing targeted traffic.  Conduct reviews yourself on industry leaders products and services and post it on your blog as well.  This also generates interest and can drive targeted traffic to your website.

10. Forums and Discussion Boards

Participate in industry specific forums and discussion boards.  This is a great way to drive targeted traffic to your website as it allows you to interact with others who operate within your industry.  It also allows you to meet and network with other industry leaders who may be willing to allow you to guest post or conduct a review for you.

BONUS: Frequent Updates

I’m providing this bonus because in my experience, many of my clients are unaware that frequent updates to their website will help to bring in more targeted traffic.  By updating your website frequently, search engines spiders will see the new updates and will have to re-index the new content to keep their search results fresh.  As long as you take advantage of SEO techniques and update your website frequently, i.e. minimum of 2 to 3 times per week, search engines will re-visit and re-index constantly.
