Social Media Marketing Success Takes Only 30 Minutes A Day

by Sean Smith on August 17, 2009

As the owner of a successful web design and multimedia firm, I deal with all types of clients.  These days when conducting business with my various clients, I find the vast majority of them are concerned with search engine optimization and increased organic search engine rankings.  Yet many of them fail to integrate a sound social media marketing strategy into their overall online marketing plan.  When faced with this realization I often suggest to my clients a social media marketing strategy, only to then be confronted with yet another objection…

“We don’t have the time to waste updating multiple social media sites.”

In other words, “we don’t want to spend the time communicating and building a relationship with our customers and potential business partners.”  Now, this is not to say that they don’t want to build customer loyalty, but rather that they truly don’t understand the purpose, let alone the potential of having a sound social media marketing strategy.

So, how do you quickly and efficiently provide value to your customers while building business relations and establishing customer loyalty through social media?  More to the point, how do you do so in a timely manner so as it doesn’t distract from the day to day operations of conducting your core business?  The answer to these questions is simple, “centralize”.

You see, once you implement a social media marketing strategy you can centralize your use of the many social media sites which you have as a part of your strategy.  By centralizing your strategy, you can effectively communicate and build relationships with your customers in a timely manner.  Centralizing will allow you to keep up to date with your social media followers as well as easily and efficiently update your followers with news, announcements, special offers and more through the use of a few simple resources.

FriendFeedhttp://friendfeed.com

Use FriendFeed to consume the feeds of your various social media sites and display them in one place.  FriendFeed connects with numerous social media sites and consumes their feeds to display in one location on the internet.  Not only does FriendFeed consume feeds but it also allows you to find new followers as your posts are promoted to the top of everyones feed the more others comment on and interact with it.  This is extremely powerful, as no other social media site currently does this with your status updates and posts.

Ping.fmhttp://ping.fm

Used properly, Ping.fm can be a valueable resource allowing you to quickly and efficiently update all your social media sites from one place.  I use Ping.fm quite a bit, as it allows me to quickly post links to artciles and content I find valuable and interesting, as well as videos, images and simple status updates to sights such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace, Delicious and more!  Once you have your social media marketing strategy in place, Ping.fm will become a very valuable resource for you when updating your social media followers.

Once you implement your social media marketing strategy, you can use the above tools as well as various other resources to quickly and easily track and update all your social media sites in a matter of minutes.  And, the great news is, it’s FREE!  It is important to note here however, that although these tools allow you to efficiently streamline your various social media sites, from time to time you will want to visit your individual social media sites on occassion to ensure you are getting the best of all they have to offer.  It may only take minutes to use the centralized method detailed in this post, however, it is important to note that a social media marketing strategy is like any other marketing strategy.  It requires time and effective planning for it to be truly successful.  However, the above resources will definitely make it a lot easier!

Thanks for reading!  I’d love to hear your feedback on this post so don’t hesitate to leave a comment!

    Sean,
I can’t thank you enough for your post. One of the greatest obstacles for me in utilizing the many social sites that are out there as I get ready for the release of my first book is the energy and time it will take for me to keep track of each site. I’d rather be writing. I never knew that “centralizing” was an option! I may just muster up the courage now to tackle more than only my Linkedin account.

    Thank you!

Hi Sean, just want to echo Dawn’s comments. Thanks for taking the time to share this. I, too, had no idea that there is such a time-saving option. As an independent PR/Communications specialist who works primarily in the none-profit sector, anything I can do to help my clients make the most of their tight resources is a huge help.
    Thanks again,
