Why People Really Start A Home Business

by Sean Smith on June 5, 2009

This is a question that few people actually explore yet it is at the center of how you become successful with your home based business. If you gain an understanding of this one simple concept, it will compel your home business into very successful and lucrative heights! So listen up as I’m going to share the answer to this question with you and encourage you to think of this the next time you are sharing your opportunity with others.

No one starts a home business because their excited over the products or services, nor do they do so because they are truly excited over the opportunity and its compensation plan. Sure we justify our decision to start a home business by making statements like “I started my home business because the products are great and I actually save people money” or “the compensation plan is extremely lucrative and it just made sense to me.” Again, these statements are simply key points about your opportunity and its products and services. They are not the true reason anyone starts a home business. Once you understand this concept, you’ll find it much easier to motivate your team and grow your organization.

Before we go any further with this topic I want you to make a commitment right now that you are no longer going to motivate your team or sell your opportunity to prospects by telling them how great the products and services are or how lucrative the compensation plan is. Go on, say out loud, “I am no longer going to motivate my team or sell prospects on my opportunity by promoting how great the products and services are or how lucrative the opportunity is!” Commit to it. Follow through with the commitment and prepare to be come a true motivator and leader.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way and secured your commitment, lets get to the heart of this topic. Have you ever bought a lottery ticket? If so, why? Ask yourself, why does anyone buy a lottery ticket? The answer to this question is also why anyone truly starts a home based business. Sure, the money motivates them to make the purchase just as a lucrative compensation plan motivates people to sign up into your business. However, the money it is not what will keep your team motivated to achieve success in the long run. So then, why does anyone buy a lottery ticket or start a home business? I’ll tell you why!

People start a home business because it provided them with the hope that their dreams are finally within grasp.

This is extremely valuable knowledge as it will make sponsoring easier and allow you to sponsor better quality people into your business. It will also allow you to lift your team up when they are facing adversity, motivate your team when the excitement of the opportunity wears off and help them achieve success when they never thought they could.

Let’s explore why this knowledge is so valuable. The next time you are talking to a prospect, don’t mention the products or services unless of course they ask, but don’t focus on them. Nor should you focus on how lucrative your compensation plan is. Instead, listen to your prospect, ask them questions and help them identify how your opportunity can help them attain what they really want. You must identify what your prospect wants out of life and then present your opportunity as a solution. You’ll find that people will be much more receptive toward you and may actually listen to what you have to say because you showed them that you have taken a genuine interest in helping them and not selling them on your products or opportunity.

Now, lets look at how this same knowledge can help you keep your team motivated. Have you ever been contacted by one of your downline when they are frustrated with their business and ready to give up? Listen closely because this is where leaders are born. How you apply this new knowledge to motivate your team is critical and a key aspect of running a successful home business. Do you attempt to encourage your frustrated team member by telling them how great the products and services are, or by re-selling the compensation plan to them? Heck No! Here’s how you would apply this new knowledge to motivate your frustrated team member as well as the rest of your team.

A key point to remember, the person asking the questions is in control of the conversation. Ask your team members why they started their home business. Get to the root of their reasoning for wanting to build a home business with you in the first place. Really dig deep. Let me ask you, what were you feeling when you first saw the opportunity. What were you thinking? I’ll bet it was along the lines of, “Wow, If I made that kind of money I could do the things in life that I would much rather be doing and enjoy my life. I could finally take my family on that dream vacation I always wanted too. I would no longer worry about how I’m going to send my kids to college. Heck, my spouse can even quit their job and we could get out of debt.” Again, this is what your team members were thinking as well when they started their business. It made them feel good and dream again. It is important you take them back to those thoughts and feelings. Help them remember what it would feel like when they achieve enough their success, their “Why”, or their “Dreams”.

You have to help your team members feel that success. Help them to re-gain that feeling of achieving their dreams again. Let them know that it is within their grasp if they would continue to stay focused and work their business. Tell them they can achieve their dreams and attain the financial independence and time freedom they desire because you believe in them and want to help. Then ask them what you can help them with in their business.

You have to give without want before you can have. This is important for you to understand as you must take a genuine interest in your team members and other people before you can help them achieve their dreams. By doing so, you will achieve yours!

I hope this topic has helped to shed light on why people start a home business and provided you with a better understanding as to what people need in order to achieve success with their business. Please provide your own insights and comments as I’d very much like to hear how this knowledge has helped you.
