Being involved in the network marketing industry over the last 15 years, I’ve had a lot of success as well as a lot of failures. Of course I have more success now than I do failures, but only because I’ve learned from each experience and applied those lessons to achieve success in my efforts. Here are five lessons I’ve learned over the years to help you succeed online with your network marketing business.

Failure to Plan – To many times I’ve seen new network marketers start a network marketing business, set up their company replicated website and assume that the customers and distributors will magically come to them. This failure of planing leads to immediate failure rather than immediate success. A network marketing business is a business and should be treated as one. Any business whether network marketing or not who desires to succeed online requires a sound online marketing strategy in order to succeed. Take the time to formulate a plan and how you are going to implement it to achieve the success you desire.

Shotgun Adverting - If you haven’t already read my post, Shotgun Kills Marketers, do so for a more detailed explanation of this failure. Failure to plan leads a network marketer to make this mistake in a big way! Most network marketers take this approach with their online advertising efforts spending lots of time and money without seeing any positive return. Network marketers who make this mistake tend to advertise to anyone whom they think will listen and blanket the internet with their ads without truly talking to those prospects who may be truly interested in what they have to offer. Spend time researching and identifying your niche market and advertise to it. You’ll be surprised at the increase in success you’ll experience!

Valley of Death – The valley of death is a term used to describe a network marketers tendency to confuse the invitation with the presentation. Most network marketers do this both online and offline. However, in the online world of social media and the internet this can cause you to lose credibility instantly. The worst thing you can do is spam your friends on Facebook and Twitter as well as anyone in your email address book with posts and messages about the greatest financial opportunity of all time. Never, thrust your opportunity or products into the faces of all your friends. Internet marketing should be views as one big PARTY! You wouldn’t go to a party at a friends house and spill your guts to everyone at the party about how you have a trunk full of widgets you’re selling. This tactic turns most people off. Online advertising through social media should be viewed as the term “social media” so eloquently states, as a social effort. You must first establish yourself as a trusted friend and gain the trust of those whom you seek to sell your network marketing product or opportunity too. Networking is alive and well and social media is the way to do it, but you have to network and NOT sell.

Mentorship – The foundation for any successful network marketing is good leadership. Without good leadership it is inevitable that a network marketer will fail simply because they lack the mentorship necessary to succeed online. This occurs when a network marketer who sponsors a new distributor fails to train their new distributor on how to succeed with their network marketing business online. The sponsor themselves has little or no knowledge on how to plan, implement and succeed online therefore they can not successfully share this knowledge with their own network marketing organization. Spend time educating yourself on how to successfully plan and implement a successful online marketing strategy.

Training – This is a BIG one and not the fault so much of the network marketer themselves. Most network marketing companies don’t typically have any experience with online advertising and therefore cannot offer effective training to their distributors. As a result, many network marketers are left searching for the training they seek to attain the knowledge required to successful build a network marketing business online. Here are a few resources that provide the training an knowledge necessary to succeed at building a thriving network marketing business online: Magnetic Sponsoring, Building on a Budget, Black Belt Recruiting, PPC Domination, and The Definitive Guide to Google AdWords just to name a few!
