5 Social Media Tips for Your Business

by Sean Smith on July 20, 2009

Here a 5 tips to help you get your social media marketing efforts off to a successful start. Please share your thoughts in the comments and retweet this post to share with others. Enjoy!

  1. Use free sites. Use free online services, such as the mobile short-message site Twitter, and popular networking sites Facebook and MySpace, to post significant news, specials or events. For example, you run a small Italian restaurant with a loyal following. You could create a Twitter account and upload the lunch or dinner specials via “tweets,” or short messages of up to 140 characters, daily to customers’ smart phones or to other Web sites.

  2. Shift marketing costs to social media. After learning how social networking operates, use social media to free up traditional marketing dollars for your small business by putting it online. You can quickly learn which of your Facebook or MySpace “friends” or online “group” members received and responded to your message.

  3. Do your own social-media optimization project. Learn about the competition in your industry and geographic region that are tapping social networking. Starting by researching the competition in the major search engines — Google and Yahoo.

  4. Take social-network marketing to the next level. Create and post richer content about what your customers would expect from someone in your business. Don’t view social media sites as a place to simply hype your wares. It’s a place for conversation.

  5. Use blogging to drive search results and help new customers find you. Lately, blogging has gained greater attention, with the advent of “microblogging” on Twitter. But consider the time commitment and strategy before launching an account.

Going to add a few comments to augment what you have here...
    1. When someone tweets a special, they can add a special code and mention that code to you and get a special discount or a little extra something. Also, can offer last minute specials for inventory items that you want to get rid of.
    2. REACT to what you see posted about your business and meet the challenges head on. Don't just take in comments and do nothing about them.
    3. Tag properly so you can take advantage of the search engines.
    4. Research shows that people are making decisions before they go to vendor sites. Get customers where the decisions are happening - social networking. Add to the conversation appropriately with leadership information - people will naturally migrate to you as a trusted business advisor.
    5. know what you are doing before you blog. Potential customers dont want to see you are on a learning curve - they want to know you are the source for the latest information.
  • Great advice Anne! I couldn't agree more, social media is a place for you to build relationships with and network with your customers. Your advice to contribute to their conversations on social networking sights is right on as it builds trust and helps to establish yourself or your business as an expert in your market.

Again, all great advice and it is great to see you are reading my blog ;-)

    Thanks for commenting!
